VIDEO: 5-Hectare Underwater Cemetery in the Philippines

Explore the 5-hectare underwater cemetery in the Philippines. It used to be a graveyard above the sea but it collapsed and sunk at sea when Mount Vulcan erupted in 1871.

The concrete large cross marks the sunken cemetery. It was built to replace the graveyard’s original cross toppled by Typhoon Ruping in 1981, it was destroyed and its remnants are found underwater.

In 2004, the local government declared the site a marine-protected area. Once a site full of tombstones is now a haven for different marine species and corals.

The sunken cemetery is located at the shallow water off the beach of Barangay Bonbon, Catarman, Camiguin, Philippines.
